Hey guys!
I'm actually pretty excited to share this one! Something I get a lot is how on earth do I manage to build an online income when I'm working such big days, and also out of phone reception for most of my day!?
So I'll tell you! I hope this can be a guide to anyone who's wondering how they could do it too; but at the end of the day it's just about finding a schedule that works for you!
The bottom line is that thanks to modern technology, you don't need anywhere near as much "online time" as you do "screen time" to get things done! The beauty of apps is that you can read and reply to messages, write a post, and even, to some extent, like and comment on other posts, all without needing an active internet connection. Then the app holds onto the activity, and updates when you're next online; the status posts, the messages send, and other replies and notifications come in! This is especially useful on days when I'm in and out of service all day, because I've always got fresh things to catch up on when I get 5 minutes, regardless of whether I have service in that spot or not!
Of course, some things must be done online, and I'm sure to prioritise them; whether I need a little time before work to sort out something for a client, or I need to load a webpage to find a link or resource throughout the day, or managing the algorithm on my social media and growing my network after work! If I catch up on other work while I'm out of reception, it makes the online essential jobs so much more manageable when I do sit down with an internet connection. In fact, I've gotten to the point where I'd much rather catch up on my inbox when I've got no phone reception, since I won't be distracted by new messages coming in!
This business really can be done in stolen moments, so once you see how you can work it into your day, it becomes easy to spend 5 minutes here and there or a block of time at the end of the day! I guess I'm pretty lucky with the fluidity of my job; every day is different, and I dont need to always be completely hands on, so I'm able to work my side hustle while I'm also working! Jobs like drilling post holes; waiting for the auger to drill through hard dirt or rock, walking cattle; when the mob is flowing well, and fencing; driving the ute with the jackhammer and stopping for every post to be banged in are just some of the jobs that I'm able to steal moments from! And in those moments, it doesn't really matter whether I have an internet connection or not!
So what does my day typically look like? I wake up at 5 in the morning for work. I usually don't have time to do much on my business in the mornings - by the time I have breakfast, pack lunch, let my dogs have a play, and get ready for work, it's easier to just leave it! Although, I can spare 5-10 minutes if I need to, especially if it's going to be a busy morning at work. Then we leave for work, usually hubby drives the 20mins down to the bosses house, and I'll get stuck into my inbox! It doesn't matter that there's not much reception over the property, I'll just start working my way through, and the messages send when they can. On days where we take separate vehicles to work, or I have to drive, I just get a later start on my inbox; and throughout my morning, I'll continue to chip away at my messages if I can, depending on what's happening at work! Between a morning smoko break and a lunch break, I usually get through my messages and can move on to other work like content creation - writing posts and blogs!
I have a notes app on my phone, and I'll jot down ideas as they come to me, so then I can flesh out blog posts when I have longer stretches of time. And I'll save drafts of posts in the Instagram app so that I can just post them when I'm ready! I'm also conscious to take photos as things appeal to me so that I'm not having to search Google or Pinterest for every single picture I post - I do a combinaton of original photos and borrowed inspiration, so I'm also conscious to screenshot other inspiration as it appeals to me too, so then I can share it when I'm ready!
By the end of the work day then, I've usually gotten through my inbox, and also done some form of content creation, taken some photos and occasionally even shared a post! I can achieve all this by utilising every spare minute I can, like when I'm in a vehicle and someone else is driving, or when I'm waiting on the boss for a minute or two, or I can multitask whatever I'm doing at work - once you start seeing the possibilities to do the things in stolen moments, it becomes habit to just do them! So once I get home from work, I'm free to do the things that actually need an internet connection! If I haven't posted that day, that's when I'll post some content, and then manage the social media algorithm - interacting with my followers and friends, and grow my network. I usually do that around the dogs, and chooks and my other afternoon jobs!
Then, it's inside and time to cook tea! I'll usually put on a podcast or a recorded training to listen to while I do that, since it's important to match activity with personal development! After cooking tea, eating and showering, that's when I'll have a final block of time to do some more "online" work, and maybe a last lap through my inbox if I have time! Once I finish up what I need to do with an internet connection, the rest can wait until morning - time for bed! Sleep is important to me, since I'm always up early!
So that's it! There's not really anything special about how I find time, just that I do, and I'm consistent in finding a little time each day, no matter what my internet situation! My actual internet time is really just converting time I used to waste in the scroll hole into productive activities. Stolen moments are key though - everyone's busy, but everyone also has stolen moments to themselves throughout the day too... What will you do with yours?
